En una computadora regular tienes un sistema binario conformado por unos y ceros. Un bit en una computadora clásica sólo puede tomar 1 o 0, mientras que en una computadora cuántica un Qubit puede ser 1 o 0 y 1 y 0 a la vez.
En el mundo cuántico (fenómenos físicos a escalas microscópicas) una partícula puede poseer dos o más valores de una cantidad observable, usemos la siguiente analogía: veamos a esta partícula como vemos a una simple manzana. Esta manzana puede estar en dos o más lugares al mismo tiempo, puede tener una, dos, ninguna o más mordidas al mismo tiempo, puede ser verde, azul, roja, amarilla o negra al mismo tiempo, etc. A este fenómeno se le conoce como Superposición Cuántica, y es el concepto que se aplica en la computación cuántica.
Los acontecimientos en un ambiente macroscópico no parecen exhibir este tipo de propiedades de la física cuántica, he ahí la disonancia entre la física cuántica y la física newtoniana, he ahí la diferencia entre la computación cuántica y la computación clásica.

Un bit en una computadora clásica sólo puede tomar dos valores: 1 o 0, mientras que en una computadora cuántica un Qubit (quantum bit) trabajando con las leyes de la Física Cuántica, puede ser 1 o 0 y puede ser 1 y 0 a la vez, tal como en la analogía de la manzana.
El gran desafió de la computación cuántica es el diseño de tener este objeto macroscópico, con una parte de él completamente aislado de las leyes físicas macroscópicas en las que vivimos, estando y trabajando en las rarezas del mundo y los fenómenos cuánticos.
Una vez que podamos aprovechar al máximo el poder de una computadora cuántica podremos ejercer cálculos que tardaríamos el tiempo de vida que lleva el universo con una computadora regular.
D-Wave System: ¿Computación Cuántica?
En mayo del año 2013 la empresa D-wave system lanzó su computador cuántico D-wave two que con su poder de cálculo de 439 Qubits, obtuvo un resultado de ser en promedio 4000 veces superior D-Wave QPU, lanzada en 2017, que usa 2000 cubits superconductores. Esto es unas 2,600 veces más rápido que el mejor algoritmo clásico (HFS) para resolver el único problema que sabe resolver.
Esto no significa que se haya logrado la supremacía cuántica, ya que no está demostrado que D-Wave QPU sea un ordenador cuántico; podría ser un ordenador clásico no determinista que usa cubits como bits aleatorios, es decir, una fuente cuántica de aleatoriedad.
¿Ahora es más lento que en 2013? La comparación usada en el 2013 estaba sesgada. Solo se usó recocido simulado (SA) y un algoritmo de Montecarlo cuántico simulado (QMC). En 2014, D-Wave Two era más lento que el mejor algoritmo conocido (HFS por Hamze–de Freitas–Selby). Ahora, D-Wave QPU ha logrado batir a HFS.
Por otra parte, uno de los aspectos más interesantes de la actualización de SSH, SSH 8.0, es la inclusión de un método de intercambios de llaves resistente a nivel cuántico, optimizando la seguridad a la par de los avances tecnológicos.
Es solo cuestión de tiempo para que sistemas de computación cuántica dejen de costar 10 millones de dólares y sean no viables debido a su alto costo de mantenimiento (debe ser mantenido a una temperatura de -273.12 °C) y que pasen a estar en cada una de las universidades y laboratorios del mundo ayudándonos y sirviéndonos en cualquier área en que lo necesitemos.
