Siguiendo los principios ágiles de DevOps, esta metodología busca optimizar la gestión de datos, mejorar la calidad de los análisis y alinear las soluciones de datos con las necesidades del negocio.
DataOps: datos óptimos para la era de la inteligencia
Siguiendo los principios ágiles de DevOps, esta metodología busca optimizar la gestión de datos, mejorar la calidad de los análisis y alinear las soluciones de datos con las necesidades del negocio.
Se habla mucho de DevOps, que permite integrar las tareas de desarrollo de software y operaciones para acelerar la puesta en producción de las nuevas aplicaciones. En esta misma línea y apoyándose en principios similares, emerge con fuerza creciente un nuevo concepto: DataOps.
Se trata de una metodología ágil y orientada a procesos que tiene como objetivo generar una mayor eficiencia en la generación de valor y en la creación de análisis a partir de los datos. Para eso, combina equipos de desarrollo, de datos (incluyendo científicos e ingenieros de datos) y de operaciones para que:
–Puedan trabajar de manera colaborativa y automatizada.
–Unifiquen herramientas, procesos y estructuras en uso.
–Ayuden a que la organización avance en su camino hacia el modelo data driven.
La organización guiada por datos
Entre otros beneficios, DataOps mejora la calidad de los análisis y los resultados, apoya las iniciativas de inteligencia artificial (cuya materia prima son, precisamente, los datos de buena calidad), permite un mayor alineamiento entre las mejoras implementadas y los objetivos de negocios y reduce los costos de gestión de esos datos.
Hoy, los datos son el activo estratégico de las organizaciones: constituyen la clave para obtener ventajas competitivas, ofrecer la mejor experiencia para los clientes, optimizar las operaciones, incrementar la productividad, promover la innovación y elevar la satisfacción y la retención del talento.
No se trata solo de acumular datos, sino de definir las estrategias de gestión, protección y almacenamiento para garantizar que todos tengan acceso a la misma información en todo momento.
En ese sentido, una empresa es data driven cuando logra apoyar todos sus procesos de decisión en datos y deja de lado mecanismos y variables “tradicionales” como la intuición o miradas sesgadas del mercado.
La base de DataOps es la agilidad
Tal como lo hace DevOps, la base del concepto de DataOps se inspira en las metodologías ágiles: se valora la entrega continua y eficiente de productos analíticos, se apuesta a la prueba y el error y se consideran múltiples iteraciones hasta aproximarse al resultado deseado.
Existe un Manifiesto de DataOps, que afirma que los equipos “valoran los análisis que funcionan, midiendo su rendimiento por la información que proporcionan” y que “adoptan el cambio y buscan comprender constantemente las necesidades cambiantes de los clientes”.
El estilo de trabajo DataOps busca romper estructuras aisladas o armadas en silos, que suelen ser rígidas y lentas -cuando no un obstáculo insalvable- para dar respuesta al ritmo que se requiere en tiempo de big data, inteligencia artificial, machinelearning, internet de las cosas y otras necesidades relacionadas con la transformación digital que sean altamente intensivas en términos de uso de datos.
Por eso, los equipos suelen ser interdisciplinarios, con expertos en operaciones, ingeniería de software, ciencia de datos o gestión y planificación, y también -idealmente- tienden a atravesar diferentes sectores de la organización.
Entre las similitudes y las diferencias
DataOps se parece a DevOps en cuanto a las formas: en ambos casos, los equipos necesitan trabajar de manera integrada para analizar el problema en su conjunto. Y en el caso puntual de DataOps, esto significa replantear el flujo de procesamiento de datos desde el momento en que son capturados o creados hasta el instante en que son utilizados.
Entre las diferencias entre ambas metodologías, podemos mencionar que DataOps tiene el potencial de afectar a la organización en su conjunto -hoy por hoy, todas las áreas dependen de los datos-, y que incluso es el camino para acelerar la visión data driven.
Las empresas acumulan cada vez más datos en la medida que avanzan en sus procesos de transformación digital. Los científicos e ingenieros de datos son idóneos para estructurar modelos que permitan obtener valor de esos datos. Y los responsables de operaciones son los que entienden que le hace falta al negocio para cumplir sus objetivos. DataOps se ocupa de combinar los mejores elementos de todos esos mundos para convertir los datos en inteligencia para la organización.
