En la era de la IA, migrar a cloud es mucho más que un proyecto de modernización tecnológica. Es una decisión estratégica que determina la capacidad de una organización para competir en un mercado cada vez más impulsado por IA.
El reciente lanzamiento de una nueva región de Amazon Web Services (AWS) en Chile refleja una tendencia más profunda que la expansión de infraestructura regional. Señala la aceleración de un cambio en las prioridades empresariales en América Latina. La necesidad de adoptar cloud para impulsar nuevas capacidades dentro de la empresa. O, dicho de otra forma, de construir las bases adecuadas para escalar la IA.
Este cambio de perspectiva se explica en particular considerando que la IA, en especial en aplicaciones empresariales, no funciona en el vacío. Modelos predictivos, automatización inteligente, copilots internos o soluciones de IA generativa dependen de tres condiciones fundamentales. La primera, capacidad de cómputo elástica. La segunda, acceso rápido a datos confiables. La tercera, arquitecturas capaces de integrar múltiples sistemas en tiempo real.
Estas condiciones son difíciles de sostener sobre infraestructuras legacy. Por no decir imposibles.
La importancia de migrar “bien”
En muchas organizaciones de América Latina persisten algunos obstáculos y desafíos. Los más comunes: entornos híbridos improvisados, aplicaciones críticas on-premise, silos de información y procesos de integración manual. Este tipo de arquitectura muchas veces no se modificaron porque “siempre anduvieron”. O porque sostuvieron el crecimiento de la empresa durante décadas. Y es cierto que hoy pueden sostener la operación diaria, pero se convierten en una barrera cuando el negocio necesita velocidad, experimentación y escalabilidad.
El problema no suele manifestarse al inicio de una iniciativa de IA. De hecho, muchas pruebas de concepto logran resultados prometedores incluso sobre infraestructura heredada. La fricción aparece después, cuando llega el momento de industrializar esos casos de uso.
Es ahí donde emergen las preguntas. ¿Cómo escalar un modelo entrenado con datos dispersos? ¿Cómo garantizar latencia baja para aplicaciones críticas? ¿Cómo controlar costos de cómputo cuando la demanda crece de forma no lineal? ¿Cómo gobernar seguridad, compliance y observabilidad en entornos distribuidos?
Sin una base tecnológica moderna, la IA deja de ser una ventaja competitiva y empieza a convertirse en un cuello de botella. Por eso, migrar “bien” es fundamental. No toda estrategia cloud genera el mismo resultado. Mover cargas de trabajo sin rediseñar arquitectura, gobernanza o pipelines de datos puede trasladar ineficiencias existentes a un entorno más costoso.
Análisis y priorización de workloads
Una migración estratégica es también una oportunidad para repensar capacidades.
Esto supone evaluar:
– Qué workloads conviene modernizar primero.
– Cómo diseñar arquitecturas resilientes.
– Qué datos necesitan ser priorizados.
– Qué capacidades operativas serán necesarias para sostener el crecimiento.
También exige contemplar aspectos que suelen subestimarse: FinOps, seguridad por diseño, automatización operativa y observabilidadend-to-end.
En América Latina, este proceso adquiere una dimensión particular. La cercanía regional de nuevas infraestructuras cloud reduce la latencia, facilita estrategias de residencia de datos y simplifica ciertos requerimientos regulatorios. Pero estos avances sólo generan valor cuando las organizaciones están preparadas para capitalizarlos. La oportunidad real se produce cuando la empresa es capaz convertir esta facilidad en velocidad de innovación.
El costo de la postergación en la modernización
Las empresas que posponen la modernización de su infraestructura manejan una lógica defensiva: evitar costos inmediatos, minimizar disrupciones o prolongar la vida útil de sistemas existentes. Sin embargo, el costo de la postergación empieza a ser cada vez más visible.
