Implementation of Azure Labs Services
An important campus of the University of Guadalajara achieved immediate access to virtual machines amidst the pandemic situation.
About the client
Public institution of middle-higher and higher education based in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara. Chronologically, according to its foundation, it is the second oldest and most important university in Mexico, the seventeenth in North America, and the fourteenth in Latin America.
Since 1994, the University operates through a network model to organize its academic activities.
The University Network is comprised of 15 university centers, a Virtual University System, a High School Education System, and the General Administration of the institution.
For the 2021-2022 academic year, the total enrollment of the University Network amounts to 310,000 students, at both the Higher and Middle levels.
Needs
The University aims to implement Azure Labs services to meet the needs of up to 6000 students in the final phase of the year 2021.
The following profiles are required to meet the students’ demand, each containing the necessary software: Stata and Magaya.
Solution

The following work plan is proposed:
1. Information gathering.
2. Requirements gathering for service parameterization.
3. Analysis of installation and configuration prerequisites for Azure Labs.
4. Verification of Microsoft Azure AD and Microsoft AD.
5. Definition of profiles (workspaces).
6. Configuration of the Azure Labs environment.
7. Synchronization between Microsoft AD and Microsoft Azure AD.
8. Configuration and deployment of the Azure Labs solution.
9. Parameterization of the Azure Labs service.
10. Configuration and setup of license servers with the Azure Labs service.
11. Configuration of Azure Labs profiles (workspaces).
12. Configuration and deployment of the Azure Labs service.
Results
Amidst the pandemic situation, the client achieved immediate access to virtual machines for invited users, without the need to share their Azure subscription. This was facilitated by custom templates for quickly provisioning virtual lab machines and using them repeatedly in different labs, reducing response times to less than 12 minutes compared to the previous 2 days.
Moreover, a cost reduction of 250% was achieved through scheduling to automatically start and shut down virtual machines and limit usage hours.
Additionally, provisioning and scaling to hundreds of virtual machines with a single click were made possible, while the service managed all underlying infrastructure.
