La importancia de definir los KPIs en observabilidad
El uso adecuado de esta herramienta puede ser clave para mejorar la experiencia del cliente, incrementar la rentabilidad o bajar los costos, entre otros beneficios.
Video analytics: una mirada inteligente sobre las imágenes
Con apoyo en la inteligencia artificial, hoy es posible obtener información para la toma de decisiones de enormes cantidades de imágenes capturadas en video: desde movimientos anómalos o sospechosos hasta la ruta de comportamiento de los consumidores.
No se trata de la tecnología, sino del negocio. Por eso, las métricas de observabilidad se convierten en una variable clave a tener en cuenta para entender si se siguieron los caminos adecuados y optimizar las decisiones a futuro.
La observabilidad es un conjunto de prácticas y herramientas para gestionar y controlar arquitecturas distribuidas y complejas. Cada vez más, se consolida como una evolución del monitoreo, que detecta anomalías y anticipa problemas en el cada vez más complejo panorama de IT.
Pero ya no desde una perspectiva técnica, como la de entender si un servidor funciona o no. Hoy, el foco está puesto en entender cómo cada inconveniente en los sistemas impacta en la experiencia del usuario y, como consecuencia, en los resultados de tu organización.
Los tres pilares de la observabilidad
El modelo de observabilidad se sustenta sobre tres pilares: registros, métricas y seguimientos. Analicemos en detalle cada uno de ellos y luego nos concentraremos puntualmente en las métricas.
Registros (logs)
Los eventos se conservan en registros que, en general, se presentan en formato de texto u otra alternativa entendible por los humanos. Casi siempre son generados por elementos de infraestructura: dispositivos de red, servidores, nubes. Pero también pueden crearse a partir de sistemas operativos, middleware o plataformas digitales.
Su objetivo: registrar aquello que podría representar información crítica sobre el funcionamiento de cada uno de esos elementos.
La información que almacena tiende a ser histórica o retrospectiva. Su uso principal suele ser establecer contexto en la gestión de operaciones. En algunos casos, incluyen datos de telemetría con información detallada disponible en tiempo real.
Métricas (metrics)
Las métricas en observabilidad son datos cuantitativos que proporcionan información sobre el estado y el rendimiento de los sistemas y aplicaciones. Cuando se las recopila y analiza adecuadamente, se obtiene una visión objetiva y medible de cómo están funcionando sus sistemas.
Seguimientos (traces)
Registros de rutas de información o flujos diseñados para analizar una unidad de trabajo, como una transacción. Para ello, sigue la secuencia de procesos que la lógica de la aplicación indica.
La observabilidad al servicio del negocio
Para lograr resultados exitosos en materia de observabilidad, es necesario integrar estos tres pilares. Trabajar con ellos de forma independiente o utilizar diferentes herramientas para cada función lleva a datos inconexos y difíciles de aplicar.
En cambio, al utilizarlos de manera integrada, es posible entender no sólo cuándo ocurren los problemas, sino por qué suceden.
Si bien los tres pilares son vitales, es importante considerar algunas limitaciones que presentan. No siempre es sencillo clasificar registros para sacar conclusiones o establecer relaciones. Los seguimientos suelen generar numerosos datos innecesarios. Y los KPIs en observabilidad son difíciles de etiquetar y ordenar y necesitan de una mirada abierta y amplia para que ayuden a resolver problemas.
Por eso, a la hora de implementar el plan de observabilidad, el mindset debe estar puesto no en las herramientas, sino en los objetivos del negocio. El primer paso es entender qué necesita la organización (mejorar el nivel de servicio al cliente, acelerar los tiempos de uso de una determinada aplicación). Recién después puede avanzarse sobre los objetivos propios de la observabilidad que, por supuesto, estarán alineados con los primeros.
Definiendo los KPIs para tu negocio
En particular, las métricas en observabilidad deben estar vinculadas a objetivos del negocio. Algunas de ellas pueden estar orientadas a:
Atraer y retener clientes satisfechos
La observabilidad permite detectar puntos de fricción, demora o problemas que puedan generar insatisfacción en los clientes. Luego, se pueden aplicar medidas correctivas para solucionar esos problemas, hacer la compra más fluida y anticipar conflictos antes de que afecten los resultados del negocio. En resumen: se logra llevar la experiencia del cliente a un nuevo nivel, generando mayores niveles de satisfacción y lealtad.
Detectar y anticipar actividades fraudulentas
¿Una actividad sospechosa? ¿El comportamiento actual del usuario no se condice con su historia? Con las métricas adecuadas, es posible anticipar estas situaciones y crear planes de acción como respuesta. Así, se protege tanto el negocio y su reputación como la privacidad y la seguridad de los clientes.
Impulsar los resultados financieros
El ojo puesto sobre los factores que impactan en la rentabilidad y en los costos. Se identifican tempranamente las brechas y se corrigen antes de que afecten a la organización.
Conclusiones
Los KPIs proporcionan información sobre el estado y el rendimiento de los sistemas y aplicaciones y constituyen uno de los pilares de la observabilidad.
Sin embargo, su máximo poder radica no en que los profesionales del área puedan entender si un servidor está funcionando o no de acuerdo a lo esperado. Va mucho más allá: pueden aplicarse a entender cómo el rendimiento de IT impacta en las principales variables del negocio. Así, se trata de una pieza clave. Puede impulsar la experiencia de los clientes, la seguridad de las transacciones, el aumento de la rentabilidad o la baja de costos, entre otros beneficios.
